Professional biography

Zhongdong is Associate Dean Internationalisation for the Faculty of Science and Engineering at The University of Manchester.

Zhongdong graduated from Tsinghua University with a BEng in High Voltage Engineering & and MSc in High Voltage Technology in 1991, 1993 respectively and then from UMIST with a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1999. She joined The University of Manchester (then UMIST) as a Lecturer in 2000 and since 2009 she is a Professor of High Voltage Engineering at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Over these 15 years, she established the internationally renowned transformer research activity at Manchester, and so far 24 PhD students, 8 Post-Docs and 12 Academic Visitors of many nationalities have worked under Zhongdong’s direction worldwide. Her research focuses on condition monitoring techniques, asset management, application of new materials and characteristic modelling of power transformers, and these research activities have attracted financial and technical sponsorship from multiple international companies to form a research consortium at the University of Manchester. She has also acted as a technical consultant for over 20 national and international companies. To date she has published 50 international journal and ~150 conference papers.

She led the EEE Team that won the UK Trade and Investment’s North West Greater China Award (High Education) in 2015, and she is currently the co-ordinator and PI of the EU-China Research and Innovation Partnership on Energy (2015-18).

Zhongdong was appointed to the role of Associate Dean, Internationalisation for the Faculty of Science and Engineering at The University of Manchester in April 2016.
