About us

The Barnes Wallis student hub is a central meeting point and work space on The University of Manchester's North Campus. It is a place to meet, eat and work with its own on-site cafe, computer clusters and meeting spaces.

The hub is open every day during term-time, however opening hours vary throughout the year. To stay up to date with our opening times please check our social media channels or the information in the side bar of this webpage. The front door is locked at 5pm, but all students have swipe-access via the side door during opening hours.

Every student at the University is able to use our facilities but students studying in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering have additional access to the EEE cluster located on the third floor. Please be aware this is an access controlled cluster and students from outside the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering do not have access.

To keep up-to-date with the latest opening times, please follow us on social media.

Please note: The Barnes Wallis Hub runs a test fire alarm every Wednesday afternoon. At all other times, if an alarm sounds, students must evacuate the building as instructed. Please leave your belongings and immediately and calmly exit the building via their nearest fire exit and assemble in front of the building until given the all clear to go back in.

  • Facilities

    Computer cluster

The Barnes Wallis Student Hub has a large computer cluster available, consisting of 105 computers. This is a quiet study space. We ask that students do not eat in the cluster out of consideration for other users, but rather utilise the café or the breakout area.

EEE students have an exclusive computer cluster on the third floor – this cluster is accessible via swipe card access only. All EEE students should have this access on their ID card. If you require swipe card access, please contact your programme administrator.

    Group study rooms

There are 7 group study rooms available for students to book out. The study rooms have an occupancy ranging from 4-8 people. The Barnes Wallis team do not have access to these bookings. To book one of these rooms, please follow the standard procedure for booking a study room on MyManchester. For more information on how to book a study room see our FAQ. If you wish to use one of the group study rooms outside of the bookable hours, the rooms will operate on a first come first served basis.

There are 2 large group study spaces located by the entrance to the building; these provide space for quiet study and group study without computers. These rooms are bookable for large groups/societies/events via our e-mail address: barneswallishub@manchester.ac.uk. Please include in your e-mail the type of event you intend to hold, the amount of people expected to attend and how long you require the space for.

    Breakout area

The Barnes Wallis has a breakout area with comfortable seating and a selection of games available for students to use. Our foosball table is one of our most popular attractions! We welcome all suggestions in regards to how we can improve this area for you. If you have any game suggestion or general feedback about how to optimise the space, you can e-mail barneswallishub@manchester.ac.uk or if you would prefer to remain anonymous, there is a suggestion box located on the front desk.

    Café North

Café North is located next to the ground floor computer cluster and is open from 08:00-16:00 during term time and 09:00-15:00 over the summer break. Café North offers a selection of hot drinks, sandwiches, soups and snacks and is part of the University’s Food on Campus, so students and staff can make use of the Food in Advance Offer. To find out more about this offer, visit the Food in Advance website. There is a water dispenser located next to the till in Café North that students can use to refil waterbottles.

  • Lost property

The Barnes Wallis Hub is the central point for all items of lost property found on the North Campus. If you find lost items, please bring them to us at reception where we catalogue them and try and return them to their owners. If you have lost an item, please drop in and see us or contact us to see if your item has been handed in.

All items handed in to us are kept for one month. We will always try and reunite anything handed in to its owner, but if we are unable to do this and after the month's holding time has passed, we donate any remaining items to charity. Our chosen charity is the British Heart Foundation who are on a mission to tackle cardiovascular disease.

If you have lost your student card, we advise waiting a week before repurchasing one as it can take a little time for things to find their way back to us. If your card is handed in, then we will contact you to let you know that we have it and how you can retrieve it.
