Science and Engineering Doctoral Academy

Fieldwork and placements

As a postgraduate researcher you may be permitted to devote part of your PhD degree to study and research outside the University.

This will be in addition to fieldwork or short laboratory visits and will be permitted if:

  • it is in the interests of your research and training;
  • the institution or location of proposed study is suitable;
  • a suitable work-plan for the period of study outside the University is agreed with the supervisory team;
  • satisfactory supervision arrangements are in place;
  • export controls have been considered and adhered to;
  • compliance and risk protocols have been followed and the submission of a risk assessment where required;
  • visa and immigration regulations have been considered.

To study away, attend a conference or conduct your research away from the University, you must submit a PGR Travel Authorisation Form and state your case as to why this is requested. You should review the details with your supervisor and submit a copy of the form to the Doctoral Academy with your supervisor copied to the email.
