Fellowships

A range of funding support is available for researchers across science and engineering subjects.

We've collated the main ones we know about below.

BBSRC fellowships

Discovery Fellowships (previously Future Leader Fellowship)

Supports researchers who show excellent potential and who wish to undertake independent research in a host research group and gain the skills required to be successful in future leadership roles.

Future Leaders Fellowship

Supports early career researchers and innovators with outstanding potential in universities, UK registered businesses, and other research and user environments to tackle difficult and novel challenges with adventurous, ambitious programmes.

Returners to Research Fellowships (Daphne Jackson Fellowship)

Aimed at: Scientists wishing to return to research after a career break of two or more years for family, caring or health reasons. EPSRC fellowships

EPSRC fellowships

  • Postdoctoral fellowship
  • Early career fellowships
  • Established career fellowships

Applications for fellowships at all levels are now open. There is a new framework which removes closing dates and eligibility requirements based on years of experience, and establishes a person specification against which applicants will be judged. EPSRC Doctoral Prize fellowships

The EPSRC Doctoral Prize is a prestigious scheme aimed at developing the very best EPSRC funded students beyond the end of their PhD and help them launch a successful career in research as potential future research leaders.

Successful applicants will be expected to take their research to the next level and undertake significant new research; the Prize must not be viewed merely as an opportunity to continue/complete PhD work although continuation of specific work from the applicants’ PhD that will result in publications may be permitted.

Leverhulme fellowships

Early Career Fellowships

For early career researchers, with a research record but who have not yet held a full-time permanent academic post, to undertake a significant piece of publishable work.

Fellowships can be held at universities or at other institutions of higher education in the UK.

The Fellowships are intended to assist those at a relatively early stage of their academic careers, and it is hoped that the appointment would lead to a more permanent position for the individual, either within the same or another institution.

Philip Leverhulme Prizes

For researchers at an early stage of their careers whose work has had international impact and whose future research career is exceptionally promising - to use for any research purpose.

Philip Leverhulme Prizes have been offered since 2001 in commemoration of the contribution to the work of the Trust made by Philip Leverhulme, the Third Viscount Leverhulme and grandson of William Hesketh Lever, the founder of the Trust.

Royal Academy fellowships

Enterprise Fellowships

The Enterprise Fellowship programme supports innovative, creative entrepreneurial engineers who have demonstrated an exceptional innovation in engineering which they want to develop further.

The programme focuses on equipping the awardee with the confidence, skills, experience and network of expert advisors necessary to enable them to develop their innovation.

We support three types of individuals through our Enterprise Fellowships; researchers wishing to spinout a company from a university or research institute, recent graduates wishing to create a company, and international PhD students based in the UK, wishing to spin out or start up.

Industrial Fellowships

The Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellowships scheme enables mid-career academics and industrialists to undertake a collaborative research project in either an industrial or academic environment, where one party would host the other.

The scheme aims to strengthen the strategic relationship between industry and academia by providing an opportunity to establish or enhance collaborative research between the two parties.

Research Chairs and Senior Research Fellowships

This scheme aims to strengthen the links between industry and academia by supporting exceptional academics in UK universities to undertake use-inspired research that meets the needs of the industrial partners.
