Internal processes and requirements for fellowship applications

Some departments and institutes operate additional internal processes or provide tailored guidance for fellowship applicants. These arrangements may affect how and when you apply, and in some cases require an Expression of Interest (EOI) or internal selection before submission to a funder.

In addition to FSE's major fellowship schemes, departments and institutes may have their own internal processes to support fellowship applications. These processes are designed to ensure alignment with departmental priorities, provide appropriate mentoring and sponsorship and manage internal capacity.

Requirements can therefore vary across the University and may differ depending on the fellowship scheme and applicant circumstances.

All prospective fellowship applicants are strongly advised to get in touch at an early stage to confirm the relevant department or institute requirements, ideally before developing a full application. Early engagement helps confirm the correct process is followed and reduces the risk of delays or ineligibility at submission.

Departmental and institute fellowship guidance

The departments and institutes listed below operate additional internal processes or provide tailored fellowship guidance. Applicants should confirm whether these arrangements apply to their individual circumstances.

  • Department of Chemistry
Prospective fellowship applicants are invited to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). Shortlisted applicants are invited to interview and, if supported, are advised on suitable fellowship calls and allocated a University of Manchester sponsor.

  • Department of Physics and Astronomy
External applicants are asked to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to register their interest in applying. The Department runs an internal selection process for all major fellowship applications to ensure alignment with departmental priorities and available support.
