EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA)

Turn your passion into purpose

Doctoral Landscape Awards are PhD funding provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) which enable The University of Manchester to offer fully funded PhDs.

These awards support postgraduate researchers to undertake innovative projects that respond to real-world challenges. You’ll contribute to new knowledge in your field while supporting the development of the UK’s future research and innovation workforce.

By joining one of these PhD projects, you’ll become part of a thriving research community, working alongside experts across disciplines. You'll play an active role in shaping technologies and ideas that have an impact on society, industry and the wider economy.

Benefits of the scholarship

  • Open to all nationalities and across all research disciplines
  • 3.5 year fully-funded studentship
  • Tuition fees at home or international rate
  • Annual maintenance stipend equivalent to UKRI minimum stipend (£20,780 in 2025/26).

What you need to do

To be considered for this scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Have submitted an application by the deadline for a PhD programme.
  • Hold (or expect to achieve) a First Class or 2:1 UK honours degree (or international equivalent).
  • Ideally hold a master’s-level qualification at merit or distinction (or international equivalent).
  • Be able to demonstrate potential for academic research. This may include undergraduate projects, placements, internships, contributions to publications/articles, promoting research to a wider audience, prizes for previous work or setting up collaborations with other groups.
  • Be able to demonstrate involvement in broader activities e.g. outreach, volunteering, community engagement, engagement in EDIA and other extra-curricular activities.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to the success of The University of Manchester, and are at the heart of all of our activities. We know that diversity strengthens our research community, leading to enhanced research creativity, productivity and quality, and societal and economic impact. We actively encourage applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds and from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation and transgender status.

We also support applications from those returning from a career break or other roles. We consider offering flexible study arrangements (including part-time: 50%, 60% or 80%, depending on the project/funder).

All appointments are made on merit.

  1. Search our list of competition funded projects on the Find a project page using keyword ‘EPSRC DLA’.
  2. Specify in the funding section of your PhD application form that you wish to be considered for the EPSRC DLA.
