School of Engineering

Pioneering engineering for a sustainable future

We create a myriad of possibilities; for students pursuing skills and understanding, researchers seeking discoveries and businesses building partnerships.

Through dynamic research and teaching we're developing engineering solutions that will make a difference to society in an ethical and sustainable way.

Science-based engineering is at the heart of what we do, and through collaboration with the School of Natural Sciences we will support engineers and scientists who are technically strong, analytically innovative and creative.

Our staff and students work together to help reshape the world, developing skills in everything from robotics, green processing and AI, to healthcare technologies and low-carbon infrastructure. We are proud to foster a sense of curiosity, creativity and innovation to address real world problems.

Our Departments

Industrial pipework with pressure gauges

Department of Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineering concerns the science and technology related to manufacturing products from raw materials in a safe, sustainable, environmentally benign and cost-effective way. As the birthplace of chemical engineering, today we're the UK's largest chemical engineering department.

Civil engineering practical teaching session

Department of Civil Engineering and Management

Guided by forward thinking research in all aspects of Civil Engineering, including new materials, renewable energy, and sustainable design, our future graduates will have the skills to take on crucial roles in shaping new infrastructure and the environment which addresses climate and societal challenges. With the UK’s first teaching and research groups being established here in the 1960s, we have always been at the forefront of advances in Engineering and Project Management as both academic and professional disciplines.

Department of Computer Science

We're proud to have been the birthplace of computer science, with a number of computing firsts, including the first ever stored-program computer. Today we continue that heritage - using our leading facilities and high teaching standards to educate the next generation of computer scientists.
