Supporting inclusion in postgraduate physics research
At Manchester, we’re committed to advancing equality and inclusion within science.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy Diversity Enhancement Studentship is one of the ways we’re helping to broaden participation in postgraduate research, offering financial support to students from under-represented backgrounds in the department.
About the scholarship
This fully-funded studentship is open to home or EU applicants (overseas with fee waiver) from underrepresented groups, or challenging social or academic backgrounds, who are motivated to tackle, and plan to engage with, diversity enhancement in physics and astronomy.
The scholarship provides:
- Tuition fees at home or international rate
- Annual maintenance stipend equivalent to UKRI minimum stipend.
This support is available for up to four years and can be held in any of the Department’s research areas.
What you need to do
To be nominated for this external studentship, you must:
- Hold (or be about to obtain) a minimum of a 2i class UK Masters honours degree, or international equivalent, or a First Class Bachelor’s degree with an additional Master's degree, or international equivalent. Applicants with a First Class Bachelor’s degree, or international equivalent, with proven research experience may also be considered.
- Hold an offer of study at The University of Manchester for a full-time postgraduate research programme in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

This studentship works on a nomination basis, the lead supervisor will consider you for nomination and will support you through the process. It is important that you have had significant contact with the supervisory team during the application process and that they are aware that you wish to be considered for funding. Your application will then be considered by a departmental funding panel.
In order to be considered, you must hold an academic offer for a place on one of our PhD programmes. It is therefore essential that you apply for a place on the PhD programme of your choice as early as possible.
