Postgraduate Research Teaching Associate (PGRTA) Scholarship

Hybrid scholarships with our highest funding

With this fully funded PhD scheme, you don’t have to choose between starting your career or researching for a PhD – we’ll back you to study, teach and earn.

Every year we’ll support UK candidates tackle areas of key research, while also paying them to develop their teaching experience. You’ll leave with both a PhD and PGR Teaching Associate training (PGRTA), all while earning a salary.

What you'll get

  • A minimum combined teaching salary and stipend of £27,107.40 / annum.
  • All tuition fees covered.
  • Transferable skills to support your career.
  • Your research guided by our leading minds.

Your options:

  • 60% research / 40% teaching (5 years 10 months total).
  • 80% research / 20% teaching (4 years 5 months total).

What you need to do

Highly motivated, resilient UK students with the determination to succeed. We’re interested to hear from you if you’ve got a real passion for breaking new ground in your chosen subject area and think you could share that enthusiasm through your teaching.

We’d need you to have:

  • Submitted an application by the deadline for a PhD programme by the published deadline or be registered on a PhD programme already.
  • A 2:1 class honours undergraduate degree or higher.
  • A proven track record of engaging with research
  • An interest in teaching and supporting students.
  • The ability to engage and enthuse others.
  • Strong team working skills.
  • Initiative and organisational skills when working independently.
  • The capacity to work flexibly to tight deadlines.
  • Strong English language proficiency.

It’d also be great if you had:

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field at merit or equivalent.
  • Relevant teaching or volunteering experience.

Please note this scholarship is only open to UK students (or students visas that permit part-time study).

Equality, diversity, and inclusion are fundamental to our success, and are at the heart of all of our activities. We know that diversity strengthens our research community, leading to enhanced research creativity, productivity and quality, and societal and economic impact. Therefore, we actively encourage applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds and from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation and transgender status.

We also support applications from those returning from a career break/other roles, or with caring responsibilities, and always consider flexible study arrangements. All appointments are made on merit.

To be considered for this scholarship, you need to hold an offer for a place on one of our PhD programmes.

  1. Choose your research project.
  2. Find your supervisor.
  3. This scholarship works on a nomination basis so it’s important you make sure you have had significant contact with your supervisory team during the application process and that they are aware that you wish to be considered for funding.
  4. Complete your application prior to the advertised funding deadline (see key dates below). Specify in the funding section of your PhD application form that you wish to be considered for the PGR Teaching Associate Scholarship.
  5. Include a written statement explaining why you’re interested in a combined research and teaching PhD, and how you match the criteria listed above.
  6. Your lead supervisor will then nominate candidates for consideration by the Faculty and, if nominated, you will then be invited to an interview.
