Research and learn in our purpose-built space for innovative and creative engineering.

Benefit from national and international partnerships with 100+ companies.

Our strong relationships with government and industry shape the future through engineering excellence.

We lead the way by developing socially responsible and globally aware engineering graduates.

Redefining civil engineering education

The civil engineering graduate of the future will face many challenges, and not all of those will be technical.

To meet the grand challenges of tomorrow, the world needs us to produce engineering graduates capable of thinking differently and acting in a professional capacity that is far removed from the traditional perspective of an engineer. We are helping to redefine the world of civil engineering education, preparing our graduates for that near future by creating an environment where technical excellence is matched by socially responsible practice. Guided by forward thinking research in all aspects of Civil Engineering, including new materials, renewable energy, and sustainable design, our future graduates will have the skills to take on crucial roles in shaping new infrastructure whilst also addressing climate and societal challenges.

Tomorrow's engineers will be instrumental in creating a future that benefits all. As such their education must prepare them for what lies ahead.

Our department vision is to have our graduates lead the way for others to follow.

Professor Callum Kidd - Head of Department

Developing a zero carbon port

Analysis by Tyndall Centre’s Simon Bullock and Alice Larkin has shaped the development of shore power connections at Port of Aberdeen in a significant step towards developing a zero carbon port.

Research innovation

Our research is responding to real-world demands

We are supporting innovation and driving inclusive economic growth by integrating cutting-edge research with real-world industry collaboration. We work closely with our Innovation Factory and Business Engagement Team to drive innovative and interdisciplinary research across the Department.

We have organised networking events, such as Academia-Industry Days and seminar series to strengthen the collaboration with other institutions and industry partners.

Through interdisciplinary projects, sustainable infrastructure solutions, and the adoption of advanced digital tools, we endeavour to address the evolving demands of the construction sector.

Our research facilities

Geoenvironmental Engineering Research Laboratory

The Geoenvironmental Engineering Research Laboratory explores the behaviour of contaminated soils, waste containment and soil–pollutant interactions.

Equipped with environmental triaxial machines, the laboratory enables testing and development of remediation technologies to support sustainable land use and environmental protection.

Geotechnical Research Laboratory

The Geotechnical Research Laboratory supports advanced investigation into soil behaviour, ground stability and foundation engineering.

Facilities enable research into soil-structure interaction, slope stability and ground improvement techniques, providing critical insights for sustainable and resilient infrastructure design.

Heavy Structures and Concrete Laboratory

The Heavy Structures and Concrete Laboratory has the capability to manufacture and carryout advanced testing for reinforced concrete and composite structures.

The laboratory supports a wide range of static and dynamic tests, including the use of uniaxial machines (up to 2500 kN), drop hammers (up to 150 kg from 3 m) and a strong floor and wall for multi-axial loading. The laboratory supports standard and custom tests on concrete samples from 50 mm cubes to 2 m beams, with configurable rigs and instrumentation to support cutting-edge research.

Discover the Heavy Structures and Concrete Lab

Hydrodynamics Laboratory

The Hydrodynamics Laboratory provides advanced facilities for testing marine and offshore systems.

A large wave flume with eight wave makers generates waves and turbulent currents to support research into wave energy converters, floating wind platforms, and tidal turbines. Two smaller flumes are also available for teaching, demonstrations, and simpler projects.

Social responsibility

Research with impact

Colleagues across the Department work to generate real world impact from a broad spectrum of engineering research with our industrial and public sector partners, in government policy and with local communities.

We are making buildings safer though the development of new and sustainable construction materials; developing new floating wind turbines to rapidly decarbonise our electricity system and reduce energy costs; working with water companies to understand demand in existing and new housing developments. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
