The University of Manchester-China Scholarship Council Joint Scholarship

Value

The University of Manchester is proud to offer scholarships for Chinese PhD students that will cover fees and living expenses for three years, thanks to a joint scheme between the University and the China Scholarship Council (CSC).

The University of Manchester will cover full tuition fees for the period of the relevant programme as outlined in the offer letter (usually three years). CSC will provide living allowances as prescribed by the Chinese Government, and will cover the round-trip international airfare for students from China to the United Kingdom, visa and passport application fees.

Funding details:

  • Living allowances as prescribed by the Chinese Government, plus airfare, visa and passport fees.
  • Full tuition fees at the international rate.

Specified use

These scholarships are open across all research areas to those who are both Chinese citizens and permanent residents of the People's Republic of China at the time of the application.

Academic requirements

To be nomiated for this award by your supervisor you must:
  • Hold an undergraduate and/or master’s degree from one of the accepted Chinese institutions, or from one of the Top 50 International Universities (World University Rankings 2024, Times Higher Education ) including UoM students. Applicants from other universities outside these lists will only be considered if notable research excellence is demonstrated.
  • Have a track record of engaging with research and in particular have a record of contributions to publications/articles. If you have no publications, you'll not be eligible to be nominated unless you are a student from Peking University or Tsinghua University.
  • Hold an unconditional offer from The University of Manchester to start a PhD programme in September 2024. Students who are currently studying Master’s programmes may be made unconditional offers if their Bachelor degree meets the entry requirements for their programme.

This award is available to existing postgraduate students.

Applicants must hold an offer of study at The University of Manchester before applying for this funding.

This award can be held alongside other awards.

You will also need to:
  • Be a citizen and permanent resident of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application. Overseas Chinese students may be eligible for application subject to CSC policy at the time (CSC publicises the policy in October or November every year).
  • Return to China upon completion of your studies and/or research.

Selection criteria

Once you have been interviewed and offered a PhD place, you will then work with your primary supervisor to complete the nomination form, which needs to be submitted to the faculty. All nominations will be reviewed internally and a shortlist of candidates will be selected to apply to the CSC directly.
